Fill her app as Bentley owners get fuel for thought

HAVING to put fuel in your car is a real nuisance, writes William Scholes.

I don't just mean paying for it, though that's bad enough. I mean the actual business of unhooking an oily pump nozzle, getting your hands filthy, standing there in the wind and rain while you fill your tank and then smelling like a garage for the rest of the day.

This must be particularly wearisome if you are a Bentley owner for the simple reason that your V8- or W12-engined luxury car needs more fuel, much more often than the average Volkswagen Polo or Vauxhall Corsa.

Bentley clearly feels the same, and is doing something about it.

It has teamed up with a company called Filld - yes, the 'e' is missing, which is a sure sign that we should be on our guard - to offer owners a mobile app-based fuel delivery service.

For now it is a trial and limited to the United States - California, to be precise - but with Bentley itself describing it as the "ultimate time-saving luxury", there's no reason to imagine it won't also be extended to these shores.

All owners need do, says Bentley, is "open the innovative Filld for Bentley app, choose a delivery time, and their fuel will be delivered wherever and whenever they require".

Customers don't even need to unlock the fuel cap themselves, or identify the car's exact location as this is done for them securely through the app.

In the pipeline, so to speak, is "predictive fuel ordering", where the car places an order for itself "based on fuel level, location and customer preferences".
