ONE of the coolest cars to launch this year has to be this rather special Isuzu D-Max pick-up - and not only because they've called it the 'Arctic Trucks AT35', writes William Scholes.

Arctic Trucks are the people you visit if you want a vehicle that you can drive all the way to the North Pole. Or the South Pole, if you fancy a change. In the world of extreme off-roading, Arctic Trucks are engineering royalty.

Isuzu gave the Iceland-based company the job of beefing up the already sturdy D-Max, and the resulting AT35 model is spectacular.

The upgrades are focused on extra off-road capability, and the suspension has been re-engineered with Fox Performance Series shocks to deliver increased mobility over the most rutted tracks and brutal boulders.

Special all-terrain Nokian Rotiiva AT tyres endow the AT35 with improved all-round grip in the most challenging, slippery conditions

These huge 35-inch tyres are specifically engineered for off-road surfaces, with the rubber fitted to wheels of 17-inch diameter and 10-inch width, which is considerably larger than the standard D-Max.

The modifications mean the ride height is 125mm higher than the normal D-Max, leading to greater approach, departure and break-over angles. It means the AT35 can crawl up and over almost anything it finds itself in front of.

Production of this special vehicle is limited, and John Barr Cars is Crumlin is the only Northern Ireland dealer. Prices start at £31,499.
