Seat joins the crossover table in style

SEAT is a latecomer to the SUV and crossover jamboree, but its first effort looks to have all the ingredients to make an impact in the burgeoning sector.

Called the Ateca, it blends sharp styling with a keen price and a typically wide range of Volkswagen Group engines and transmissions.

Prices start at £17,990 - albeit for an 'S' model with a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine - and nudge £30,000 for an all-singing, all-dancing 'Xcellence' with four-wheel-drive, double-clutch automatic gearbox and the VW Group's superb 187bhp diesel version.

Mid-range SE trim looks to have the best balance of value for money and gadgets, with dual-zone climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable, heated and folding door mirrors and rear parking sensors.

There's also technology to seamlessly link your smartphone to the car, an eight-inch colour touchscreen, Bluetooth and hands-free operation.

SE models also get 17-inch alloy wheels, LED taillamps and black roof rails.

The by-now usual range of safety kit - blind spot monitor, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert and so on - is available as an option, as are toys like a power-operated tailgate, park assist and a birds' eye view parking camera.

Order books open next month and the first cars are due in showrooms in September.
