VOLVO'S new S90 has been named as the 'production car design of the year 2015' by an international panel of car designers.

The big saloon - the Swedish company's rival to the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6 - soon lands on these shores.

It successfully translates the design cues seen on the wonderful new XC90 SUV and which have also been adopted by the S90's estate brother, the V90.

The cars are further distinguished by interiors of exceptional design, comfort and quality.

Volvo design boss Thomas Ingenlath said the S90 encapsulated the company's philosophy of wanting to stand out rather than fit in.

"Our use of high-end materials, classic proportions and controlled surfacing reflects our intention to forge our own path," he said.

Owen Ready from Car Design News, which organises the annual industry design awards, said the S90 was recognised "for its priority of clear, calm design over the 'styling entertainment' that has been plaguing the industry for too long".
