THERE are just two more days left to make nominations for the first Northern Ireland Road Safety Awards.

Awards will be presented to individuals, businesses, educational institutions and community groups who have demonstrated a commitment to keeping Northern Ireland's roads safe, as well as people living within their communities.

Winners in eight categories will be announced at the inaugural awards ceremony on Friday November 27 as part of road safety week. UTV and U105 broadcaster Frank Mitchell will host the event at Cultra Manor in Holywood.

Entries for the competition, which are sponsored by leading accident management specialist, Crash Services, and supported by the Road Safety Council, will recognise the work taking place within schools, emergency services, voluntary, public and private sectors across eight categories. These include:

:: Primary school project

:: Secondary school project

:: Driving instructor

:: Emergency services person

:: Voluntary sector organisation

:: Best public sector project

:: Business award

:: Lifetime achievement award

The awards, which are also supported by U105, JMK Solicitors, Green Motion car and van rental and New Driver NI, will be judged by an expert panel made up of representatives from the private, public and voluntary sectors.

Tony McKeown from Crash Services said the awards had been established to "properly acknowledge the huge effort which goes in to helping keep our roads safe and help eliminate the tragic incidents of death and injury".

"It is vitally important that we recognise the amazing work which is being done by individuals and groups within our communities who work tirelessly on our behalf to keep us safe," he said.

Frank Mitchell said the awards could help raise awareness about road safety.

"I appeal to everyone to get involved," he said.

"Please enter yourself or, if you know someone who deserves to be recognised, please encourage them to put themselves forward."

:: Details of how to enter are at www.crashservices.com/niroadsafetyawards, which includes eligibility criteria. The closing date for entries is Friday November 6 at 6pm. For further information, call Crash Services on 028 9066 0244.
