THE new Skoda Superb has scored five stars in the latest batch of Euro Ncap tests, with the crash safety organisation praising its "robust crash protection and autonomous emergency braking systems".

Hyundai's latest i20 achieved four stars and offers "good crash protection" for its supermini segment. It missed out on a full five stars "due to a lack of an autonomous emergency braking system", said Euro Ncap.

Also tested in the latest batch of assessments was the Fiat Panda Cross, which won a modest three star rating.

"The supermini, based on the third-generation Panda 4x4 launched back in 2012, does not have much news to offer in terms of assist technologies," said Euro Ncap.

It also failed to impress in a test designed to evaluate the protection offered to smaller occupants in the driver and rear passenger seat.

The full scores for the three cars are: Skoda Superb - five stars (86/86/71/76); Hyundai i20 - four stars (85/73/79/64); and Fiat Panda Cross - three stars (70/77/50/46). See P2 for an explanation.
