A petition asking the Department of Environment to cut the cost of a provisional driving licence in Northern Ireland has been signed by more than 3,000 people.

A provisional licence in Northern Ireland costs £62.50 but just £34 in England, Scotland and Wales.

In Britain, the fee used to be £50 but was cut at the end of last year following a public consultation.

Around 25,000 new drivers apply for a licence each year in Northern Ireland.

New Driver NI, which supports new and young drivers, said drivers in Northern Ireland were "paying over the odds".

Tony McKeown from New Driver NI said that getting a driving licence was a liberating experience, "particularly for those in more rural areas".

"It can also help our young people to find a job," he said.

"Getting on the road can be a very expensive process and this isn't being made easy for our local new drivers who are being charged almost double the cost for a provisional licence than their peers elsewhere in the UK.

"We are calling on the DOE to urgently review the situation to ensure that drivers here are not unfairly paying over the odds."

Last year, the DOE cut the cost of car and motorcycle theory tests by £5, falling from £30 to £25. There are plans to reduce this further by £2 in October this year.

Mr McKeown said that keeping even a small amount of extra money in young drivers' pockets could help with the cost of "professional driving lessons and insurance".

New Driver NI's website, www.newdriverni.com, includes information to encourage safer driving and features topics such as how to pass the driving test, buying a car, insurance and looking after a car.
