Gin fans: this Belfast bar has a dedicated gin menu

A WORLD of gin awaits guests at Bert’s Jazz Bar this summer as the art deco venue launches its first dedicated gin cocktail menu. 

The menu features gin from around the world including drinks from Spain, Australia and Italy, as well as some local offerings from Belfast, Cork and Kerry. 

Bert's Jazz Bar say the menu has been designed "to put an innovative twist" to the classic G&T.

Lucy McConville, manager of Bert’s Jazz Bar, said the bar created the menu following a surge of customers asking about different brands of gin.

"Each gin brand has its own distinct flavour and we’ve put a lot of time and effort into handpicking tonics, fresh fruit and herbs to complement the drinks," she said.



Dingle Original Gin Cocktail

Dingle Original Gin is made using a secret recipe that includes rowan berries, bog myrtle and heather to create a crisp and light floral taste that balances perfectly with the traditional juniper.  


Ingredients

  • 50ml Dingle Original Gin
  • Fentiman’s Herbal Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh raspberries
  • Lime  

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Dingle Original Gin and top with the recommended Fentiman’s Herbal Tonic

3 Squeeze the wedge of lime gently before dropping it in

4 Top with fresh raspberries to finish the drink

5 Stir and enjoy

Jawbox Cocktail

Distilled slowly in a traditional copper pot, Jawbox Classic Gin has a complex, boisterous flavour with a lingering and refreshing pine finish.

Combined with ginger ale, the drink becomes a classic ‘Belfast Serve’.  

Ingredients

  • 50ml Jawbox Classic Gin
  • Merchant’s Heart Ginger Ale
  • Ice cubes
  • Ginger
  • Lime

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Jawbox Classic Gin and top with the recommended Merchant’s Heart Ginger Ale

3 Squeeze a wedge of lime gently before dropping it in

4 Top with a few slices of fresh ginger to finish the drink

5 Stir and enjoy

Gin Mare Cocktail

A sweet and bitter citrus gin that challenges the traditional taste. 

The unusual flavours of rosemary, olive and basil also assert themselves delicately in this drink.

Ingredients

  • 50 ml Gin Mare Mediterranean Gin
  • Thomas Henry Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Gin Mare and top with the recommended Thomas Henry Tonic

3 Add a sprig of fresh rosemary and thyme to finish the drink  

4 Stir and enjoy


Bertha’s Revenge Cocktail

Made with whey alcohol as a base spirit, Bertha’s Revenge is an unusual and nostalgic gin with hints of childhood favourites such liquorice, cinnamon and elderflower.

Mixed with Fever Tree Indian Tonic it switches playfully between peppery and creamy notes.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Bertha’s Revenge Gin
  • Fever Tree Indian Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice
  • Cloves

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Bertha’s Revenge Gin and top with the recommended Fever Tree Indian Tonic

3 Cut a slice of orange and carefully pierce with cloves

4 Place orange in glass to finish the drink  

5 Stir and enjoy

Four Pillars Cocktail

Described as an unconventional dry gin, Four Pillars combines modern Australian flavours, the citrus of Southern Europe and the spices of South East Asia to create a warm taste with a suitably dry finish.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Rare Dry Four Pillars Gin
  • Merchant’s Heart Hibiscus Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Apple
  • Lavender

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Rare Dry Four Pillars Gin and top with the recommended Merchant’s Heart Hibiscus Tonic

3 Garnish with a slice of apple and a sprig of fresh lavender to finish the drink

4 Stir and enjoy

Nordes Cocktail

Nordes Gin has a distinctly floral aroma complemented by unique botanicals from all over Galicia, resulting in an equally citrus and spice infused treat.  

Combined with Thomas Henry Tonic, the resulting G&T invokes a mature taste with beautifully light notes.

Ingredients

  • 50ml Nordes Gin
  • Thomas Henry Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Sage leaf
  • Strawberry
  • Lime

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Nordes Gin and top with the recommended Thomas Henry Tonic

3 Add a slice of strawberry and garnish

4 Then add a sage leaf and lime twist to finish the drink

5 Stir and enjoy

Combined with Fever Tree Light Tonic, the resulting G&T retains the unusual and unique flavour of Opihr while being exceptionally refreshing.

  • Fever Tree Light Tonic
  • Ice cubes
  • Apple
  • Rosemary

Method

1 Fill a tall glass with fresh ice cubes

2 Pour 50ml of Opihr Oriental Spice Gin and top with the recommended Fever Tree Light Tonic

3 Garnish with a slice of apple and a sprig of rosemary to bring out the spices in the drink
