TWO Belfast restaurants have become the first venues in Northern Ireland to be awarded Michelin stars since 2010.

Deane’s EIPIC on Howard Street and OX on Oxford Street have both been awarded their first Michelin Star.

Michelin announced on Twitter that 15 restaurants in Britain and Ireland had been awarded a new Michelin star in the 2016 Michelin guide.

The star awarded to Deane's EIPIC means that restauranteur Micheal Deane returns to the Michelin Guide, having previously held a star from 1997 until 2010.

These are the first Michelin stars to be awarded to a Northern Ireland restaurant since Deanes failed to make it into the 2011 guide after a flood caused the restaurant to close for repairs.

In the Republic of Ireland, Loam in Galway became the second restaurant in the city to be awarded a star.

Greenhouse on Dublin's Dawson Street was the only other Irish restaurant to be awarded a Michelin star.

The new Michelin Guide also sees two restaurants recieving the distinction of two Michelin stars for the first time. The two Japanese restaurants, Araki and Umu, are both based in London.
