Christmas reflection: The double challenge of knowing Jesus

I received a letter recently from a 95-year-old lady from Castlederg, who I have never met.

She wrote: "Dear Sir, It would be great if people could be reminded to visit those who are lonely especially in the approach to Christmas. Younger folk are unaware just how much a visit is appreciated."

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem there was no room for the Holy Family in the inn, but later they received visits from both Shepherds and Wise Men.

I'm sure Mary and Joseph appreciated both their kindness and concern.

In John's Gospel we read: "Though the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive Him. But to those who did receive him, who believe in his Name, He gave the right to become children of God."

At this time of the year we have a double challenge. First, to welcome Jesus ourselves and then to reach out to those who are not yet part of our inner circle.

That way we help to create a truly Happy Christmas.
