THE Cats Protection charity is appealing for people to adopt a cat as a "particularly busy kitten season" has left it overstretched.

The charity’s Belfast Adoption Centre recently took in more than 40 unwanted kittens on top of the 100 cats it already cares for.

Centre Manager Bel Livingstone said the charity is having great difficulty finding new owners and foster homes for the little bundles of fur.

One of the kittens waiting to be rehomed is Macavity who was rescued from inside a cavity wall at Ardoyne Sports and Social Club by Cats Protection and Westland Fire Station.

Ms Livingstone also asked cat owners to get their pet neutered as one unneutered female cat can produce up to 18 kittens a year.

"Neutering also makes cats less likely to fight and pass on diseases transmitted through biting and saliva,” she added.

Cats Protection will neuter your cat for £5 if you are in receipet of state benefits, are on a low income or are a student or pensioner.
