ONE of the north’s rare and precious ancient woods, just outside Maghera in Co Derry, is waiting to be discovered this autumn. Drumnaph Wood, owned by the Woodland Trust and occupying the gateway to the Sperrins, is the venue for a guided walk next Sunday October 9, at 2pm.

Recorded as far back as 1599, this woodland has seen centuries come and go, and is a remnant of the great forest that once covered mid-Ulster. Features like the moss-covered stones, old hazel copses and raths (fortified enclosures) are tangible reminders of past times.

The old wood is buffered by wetland, easily accessible thanks to a new boardwalk with recently planted trees in the fields further north. Wildlife is buzzing, with buzzards and sparrowhawks, otter and elusive Irish hare all living, breeding and feeding on the site.

Peter Lyons, Woodland Trust volunteer and walk leader said the autumn walk is one not to miss.

“Drumnaph Wood is the most magical place. Spring brings a carpet of bluebells, wood anemone and wood sorrel, But autumn is equally special. The air is cool and refreshing, and the leaves are changing colour.

“We’ll take a look at the different habitats, go at a leisurely pace and hopefully end up with mind and body fully refreshed.”

Drumnaph Wood has been developed in partnership with a local community group, Carntogher Community Association, which cares for more than 50 hectares of adjoining land – mostly farmland, woodland and wetland.

This guided walk is free, but booking in advance is essential as places are limited. To find out more and book a place go to www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/events or call 028 9127 5787.
