This week: Get some sunlight

IT’S no coincidence that you feel better when the sun is out. "Light hitting the back of your retina triggers the release of serotonin, a chemical that acts as an active antidepressant," explains psychologist Zoe Aston.

The effect can be so powerful that a 2005 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, which analysed data from 64 studies, suggested that light exposure raised mood by an average of 53 per cent in those with mild depression.

Aston says that 30 minutes of exposure to daylight will give most people a boost – even on colder days, "as the temperature of the air doesn’t matter; it’s the light exposure you need".
