RELAXING, low-volume music helps us enjoy eating out more, according to a study by Flinders University in Australia. And the type of music can even influence how it tastes, according to earlier research.

In a 2012 study, people were more likely to describe wine as ‘"zingy or refreshing" when lively music was played, and as "mellow and soft" when a slower track was played – even though they were all drinking the same wine.

Charles Spence, a professor of experimental psychology at Oxford University, says this is known as sonic seasoning, adding: "Music with deeper tones tends to bring out bitter tastes, while music with a tinkly pitch makes things sweeter."
