PEOPLE with long-term pain conditions are 20 per cent more likely to experience worse symptoms on humid and windy days, according to research based on more than 13,000 people across the UK.

Volunteers who experienced regular pain from arthritis, fibromyalgia (widespread body pain) and migraine recorded their daily symptoms on an app for six months, the local weather was then determined from location data on their smartphones.

When researchers from the University of Manchester analysed the data, they found that high humidity was the most important factor associated with worsening pain.

Dry days were the least likely to be painful, while temperature and rainfall had no effect.

Will Dixon, a professor of digital epidemiology who led the study, says: "Given we can forecast the weather, it may be possible to develop a pain forecast knowing the relationship between weather and pain."
