IF YOUR breath smells like sick it may be the result of gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known as heartburn – caused by stomach acid coming back up the oesophagus.

It is linked to a number of factors including certain foods and drinks such as alcohol, anxiety and stress, and smoking. These can all irritate the valve at the bottom of the oesophagus.

Dentist and dental implant surgeon Dr Guy Barwell says: "As well as acid there may be bile in the reflux, which is why breath can have a sick-like smell.

"Bile is a yellowish-brown fluid produced by the liver that helps digestion, but which can have a vomit-like odour."
