Fado Friendship Reserva, Portugal, £7, Centra
This wine is a powerful trilogy of the Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah grapes. It is ruby-red in colour and has a clean nose with aromas of ripe red fruits, forest berries and some balsamic notes. On the palate, it has good volume, well matured tannins and a persistence on the finish. Full-bodied and with smooth tannins – at 13.5 per cent ABV it is quite weighty. Serve with grilled meat and mature cheese.
19 Crimes The Uprising Red Wine, Australia, was £10, now £8, Asda
The Uprising pays homage to Australia's ‘Rum Rebellion' of 1808. Due to the government's hindering of the rum trade, the rebellion was the only time a group of soldiers and citizens banded together to overthrow it. A portion of this wine has thus been aged for 30 days in rum barrels and is dark with jammy flavours and a smoky finish. Rich and full-bodied it is an outstanding wine for the price tag – one of my personal favourites...
