Fado Friendship Reserva, Portugal, £7, Centra

This wine is a powerful trilogy of the Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet and Syrah grapes. It is ruby-red in colour and has a clean nose with aromas of ripe red fruits, forest berries and some balsamic notes. On the palate, it has good volume, well matured tannins and a persistence on the finish. Full-bodied and with smooth tannins – at 13.5 per cent ABV it is quite weighty. Serve with grilled meat and mature cheese.

The Uprising pays homage to Australia’s ‘Rum Rebellion’ of 1808. Due to the government’s hindering of the rum trade, the rebellion was the only time a group of soldiers and citizens banded together to overthrow it. A portion of this wine has thus been aged for 30 days in rum barrels and is dark with jammy flavours and a smoky finish. Rich and full-bodied it is an outstanding wine for the price tag – one of my personal favourites...
