Yalumba Y Series Viognier 2019, South Australia, £8.50, Sainsbury’s

A grape that’s becoming increasingly popular, Viognier is known for its heady, richly scented, fruity floral aromas. The Barossa Valley has some of the oldest vines in the world and is home to Yalumba, founded in 1849. This is a full-bodied dry white, with a perfumed floral scent and a ripe, peach and apricot fruit, with a silky palate-feel. Enjoy with a light pasta, seared swordfish or tuna.

Co-op Fairtrade Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 Argentina, £6.50, Co-op

We are familiar with Argentina’s flagship grape (a French variety of Malbec grows in Argentina’s high altitude vineyards) but not

as much with its Cabernet Sauvignon. This sample is well structured and polished – it features a solid mix of blackberry, currant, black cherry and savoury spice, with firm tannins lingering on the finish – a sophisticated, full-bodied red wine.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Giulio Pasotti, Lugana, £7.99, Lidl

Lugana is a small vineyard region on the slopes of Italy’s Lake Garda, producing dry wines from the Verdicchio grape. This is an easy-drinking, full-bodied, fruitier wine due to the warmer Mediterranean-style climate. If you normally drink Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc or Albarino give this a try... It pairs well with white meats, fish, soft cheeses and summer salads.
