Domaines Paul Mas Picpoul de Pinet 2018, France, £7.50, Co-op

Monday May 25 is National Wine Day and if you’re looking for something a bit different to try, then a Picpoul is a good choice. This refreshingly crisp varietal from the Languedoc’s star winemaker has delicate blossomy notes, apple, pear and lime flavours. Green apple, white peach on the palate and a lemony finish all bring this wine together. It is one of those wines that doesn’t need to pair with food – a nice aperitif.

Torres Sangre de Toro Original 2018, Spain, £6 (was £7.25), Asda

Sangre de Toro is a red wine from the Catalunya produced by Torres – probably the most famous Spanish winery on the international scene. This is a blend of Garnacha and Cariñena. This Garnacha-based blend is a deep cherry red that’s soft and easy and goes down all too readily. It is a fruit-forward glass of juicy raspberry fruits and it is great for al fresco dining with lamb kebabs, peppers and breads.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Tesco Finest Fairtrade South African Pinotage 2019, South Africa, was £7.50, now £6, Tescountil June 8

South Africa’s signature grape brings everything to the table with its damson fruit, distinctive blackberry, and oak aromas. This example has vibrant fruit flavours with a hint of mocha and a lingering taste – a smooth, warm and inviting red, packed with flavours and with just a very subtle hint of oak.
