BELFAST-based author and illustrator Anthony Cooley has spent his spare time in lockdown creating a new children’s picture book to help children cope with the boredom and anxiety of this unpredictable time, and to raise money for children in need.

A World Outside My Window is the story about a little boy named Charlie who has found himself suddenly stuck at home with nothing to do.

He isn't allowed to go outside because of the worldwide lockdown so must use his imagination as a means to escape his situation. Where will he go and what will he do?

“It’s not just about coronavirus specifically because I wanted the book to apply to any kid who is stuck at home for whatever reason, be it because of lockdown or because they are ill,” says Derry-born Cooley, who studied graphic design and illustration at Ulster University, Magee.

The 34-year-old combines his writing with being a personal trainer and this time of lockdown has given him the opportunity to "get creative and help others".

“I heard lots of stories on the media of others doing amazing fundraising projects and I wanted to use my skills to help others.?

“I would love to share this story with as many people as possible during this time as I feel it could help lots of kids cope with the situation they now find themselves in,” adds Cooley, who sketches his illustrations in pencil, before colouring with ink and scanning on to a computer. ?

A World Outside My Window is currently available in digital form, with all proceeds made from the book are going to NSPCC’s Childline charity to help the most vulnerable children at home in crisis situations.

“The idea with the book is to get as many people as possible to make a donation of at least £5-£10. For every donation of £5 or over I will provide you with a code where you can download a free digital copy of the book via iBooks,” he explains.

Having previously held school workshops following the publication of his first book Who Lives On The Moon, Cooley encourages children at this time to be creative and, like Charlie, write their own stories about imaginative places they would like to visit.

“I don't have children myself but my sister has told me about the frustration my nephews and nieces have at this time about wanting to get outside and see your friends.

“Using our imaginations is a great way of dealing with the stress of the situation.”?
