Those affected by Covid-19 share their insights

This week: ‘That I’d get worse after getting better’.

Writer Claire Coleman (42) lives in London and developed symptoms 13 days ago.

NORMALLY, you get sick with something and gradually get better – but not with the coronavirus. I thought I was well on the road to recovery after four days, only to be hit with a new wave of symptoms – it was really quite depressing.

For the first four days I had a mild fever, a cough, a headache, a bit of a sore throat, some fatigue and I lost my sense of smell.

Then, on the fifth day, I was convinced I was on the mend – I even managed to sweep my garden. But the following day I barely had the energy to sit at my desk. I crawled, shivering, into bed at 7.30pm and slept for 12 hours straight.

Now, nearly two weeks since my symptoms began, I feel less tired but my chest feels tighter and my coughing fits are more intense. The NHS advises that those with mild symptoms typically recover within a fortnight, but warns that the cough may endure.

It’s one step forward, two steps back in my recovery. So if you do become affected, be prepared: you will need mental fortitude as much as anything else.
