SHOULDERS are back in focus this season – but this time around it's about soft power, not hard-edged glamour.

Reminiscent of 1980s Laura Ashley, we're seeing lots of sassy party dresses on the high street now, combining super-short hemlines with voluminous sleeves.

The trend has been popular on the catwalks and cropped up on the red carpet too, with actress Olivia Colman rocking a red Emilia Wickstead gown with huge puff sleeves at the Golden Globes.

But how do you make this dramatic trend work in real life? For maximum impact, a cocktail frock in black or a block colour is your best bet – add sky-high heels to offset the wide silhouette.

Likewise, a blazer makes a stylish evening alternative teamed with skinny jeans or leather trousers.

For day, try a pretty blouse or bright knit paired with slouchy trousers – it's all about balance when your top half is getting all the attention.

One last tip: you'll have to drape your coat over your shoulders, because with sleeves like these, there's no way you'll be able to put in on properly.
