Wine: A great example of a delicious South African Shiraz
First Cape Special Cuvee Shiraz
(was £8, now £5, Tesco, until September 23)
The vineyards of the floral kingdom of the Western Cape are famed for their soft and fruity expression of the Shiraz grape. This is a great example of a delicious South African Shiraz – it shows dark, spicy aromas on the nose with rich, ripe, forest-berry fruits on the palate. The oaked element gives a smoky, spicy dimension to the wine. Serve with red meats, pasta dishes and cheese.
2018 Les Calcaires Pinot Noir (£6, instead of £7, Sainsbury's until September 17)
With this wine the Vin de France category relaxes the usual strict French geographic restrictions and allows winemakers to blend grapes from several different areas. This is a smooth and supple Pinot Noir, bursting with juicy red berry fruit flavours. Well-balanced with a hint of warm spice and a soft yet fresh finish. Serve with grilled red meats, tomato-based pasta dishes and semi-soft cheeses.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Studio by Miraval 2018, France (£12, Co-op)
The pinnacle of the Provencal Rosé style is Studio by Miraval – the latest release from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. It follows their iconic Miraval Rosé. This effort is just as nice with aromas of ripe raspberries and strawberries – the wine is the palest blush, with a silky, fresh palate of redcurrants, nectarines and succulent red fruits and a purity that's as tempting as the original.
