SLEEP MATTERS: How a lack of sleep affects you, this week: Memory

How a lack of sleep affects you. This week: Memory

A recent study by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that middle-aged people who struggled to sleep eight hours a night were 70 per cent more likely to suffer memory problems in old age.

Another study, by Johns Hopkins University in the U.S., revealed a possible link between poor sleep and Alzheimer’s. The results, published in the journal Sleep in 2017, showed that those who slept the least had the highest levels of amyloid plaques — the protein deposits that clog up the brain and are implicated in the disease.

It’s thought poor sleep may affect the body’s ability to clear the amyloid protein from the brain.
