LURGAN Hospital Ex Nurses League is celebrating its landmark 50-year reunion next month with a special event in Portadown.

The Ex Nurses League was formed in April 1969 prior to the opening of Craigavon Area Hospital (CAH) and at a time when nurse training was being transferred to a new school of nursing that was opening in 1970 on the CAH site. Nurse training commenced at Lurgan Hospital in 1943 and so the move marked the end of an era for the Lurgan Hospital nurse training school.

The Ex Nurses League was established in 1969 with the aim of maintaining a bond of friendship among Lurgan-trained nurses; a decision was taken to meet yearly on the first Wednesday of May in Lurgan Hospital and the tradition has continued for the past 50 years.

To mark this unique milestone, a celebratory dinner is planned in the Seagoe Hotel Portadown on Wednesday May 1 at 6.30pm for 7pm. Tickets, which cost £27.50, can be obtained by calling 028 3884 1297 or 028 3833 6703.
