Ten of the funniest jokes about love Radio 4

Owl Sense by Miriam Darlington Book of the Week, Radio 4

That’s Valentine’s Day well and truly done and dusted for another year.

But for a hearty laugh, you can catch up on the latest jokes on Funny in Four.

And, as everyone knows, Valentine’s is only fun if you’re loved up and in receipt of a big plush satin card or a bunch of red roses... not if you’re sitting single on the sidelines looking in.

Trust comedian Miranda Hart to poke the arrow into Cupid: “I don’t know who St Valentine was but I hope he died alone surrounded by couples,” she quips.

Rod Stewart takes a wry look at himself: “Instead of getting married again, I’m going to find a woman I don’t like and just give her a house.”

Sound advice too from Matt Winning: “Never date a tennis player, love means nothing to them.”

While Joan Rivers is caustic as ever: “At my age, an affair of the heart is a bypass.”

Book of the Week, Owl Sense was an enchanting listen charting author Miriam Darlington’s love affair with owls.

In the Chauvet Caves of France, there is a drawing of an owl dating back 36,000 years – it has its back to the viewer but its head is swivelled 180 degrees to meet the viewer’s gaze.

Miriam travels to Serbia to meet the long eared owl and enjoys the “soft wickery chitter” of the owls’ night song.

We hear that when times get tough, owls switch from eating mice to eating smaller birds... the Serbians found this out because they had ringed a number of blue tits and later found all those rings among the owl droppings. Needs must!

Miriam confesses to the worst crime. Out at night, owl watching with a guide, she forgets to switch off her camera flash and frightens more than 100 orange-eyed owls, sending them clattering out of a dark tree, much to the disgust of her fellow birdwatchers.

Hers was a magical story full of awe.
