'TIS the season to be jolly and… find ourselves over-eating lots of yummy foods that will have us reaching to undo at least one notch of our belt. Our waistlines aren't the only part of the body in the firing line over Christmas – our lovely teeth are also under intense bombardment from tsunami-sized waves of sugar.

So here are a few fun ideas for some last-minute stocking-fillers to help take care of your loved ones' pearly whites and have a bit of a laugh at the same time.

Aren't dentists always harping on about using dental floss? Well, your luck is in regarding encouraging someone to floss. There are lots of wacky flavours on the market, such as breakfast floss that comes in a trio pack of coffee, waffle and “appetising” bacon.

At the more extreme end, there is pickle flavour and even cat food flavour floss, for the more discerning palate.

Yum Yum make sugar-free gum that will get the saliva flowing. Saliva is enamel's best friend as it will harden up your teeth even after the 10th mince pie. There is a wide choice of chewing gum varieties to choose from including root beer, peanut butter, eggnog, jalapeño, Irish cream and the enticingly named… sour boogers!

When it comes to toothbrushes and you think you've seen it all, it's time to go intergalactic with the 'Star Wars Lightsaber Light-Up Toothbrush.' This toothbrush mimics the form of the long light sabers used in the Star Wars movies.

Pair the light saber toothbrush with one of the new charcoal black toothpastes for a really futuristic feel – making sure that the toothpaste contains fluoride to harden up the teeth, of course. It seems counter intuitive to smear black stuff on your teeth to get them whiter but it works a treat.

Feeling in a festive mood? Then try one of the singing toothbrushes to take your present box to the next level. Brush along in time to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga or if you just can't get enough of Christmas, there's a jingle bells toothbrush on the go.

So have a great time over the holiday and if you can't stop yourself overindulging on sugary treats make sure a visit to the dentist is high on your new year's resolutions list.
