- Electric cars are finally gaining traction in the mass media and watercooler discussions - and since we've been discussing how to save money on fuel, it’s worth mentioning that an EV is likely to save you money for each mile you drive. Compare your monthly fuel bill to the lease price of an EV. Charging at home costs very little and almost every single public charge point in Ireland, north and south, remains free to use (for the next few months at least, according to ESB which runs them). So the fuel saving could mean you punch above your weight in the standard of car you can afford. Find out more about electric motoring at and leaf through the pages of this newspaper - especially the weekly Drive section - for dealers’ latest prices on fully electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrids. Non plug-in hybrids do offer more miles per gallon than standard combustion-engine cars but the rule of thumb is: The more you plug in, the cheaper your motoring.

- Here's a corker: Buy six or more bottles of wine (including champagne) at Tesco and you'll get 25 per cent off. The offer is valid in store or online but your delivery must take place by October 30 to qualify for the discount.
