IF YOU find your hair picks up every smell you've encountered throughout the day, then you might want to check out the latest trend for your tresses – hair mists.

I put five hair mists through their paces to find out which ones left my locks freshest, writes Taylor Heyman. I applied each mist either during or after styling, depending on the instructions.

1. Sachajuan Protective Hair Perfume – £40

According to its makers, Sachajuan's perfume contains an extract from natural citrus oils that encapsulates odour molecules and breaks them down. I found the fragrance heavy in floral and woody notes, which when sprayed liberally on my hair possibly resulted in a headache. Go easy, though, and you'll have pleasant results. The mist deterred other odours all day long and left my hair feeling soft and looking glossy. This may be the most expensive of the five, but you only need two spritzes for the fragrance to last all day.

Verdict: 3/5

2. Kerasilk Beautifying Hair Perfume – £22

This range of hair perfumes has four fragrances: Control, Repower, Colour and Reconstruct. I tried Repower, finding it zesty, with notes of freesia and lily that made my hair smell freshly washed after every application. It required multiple reapplications throughout the day but, as the bottle fitted easily into my handbag, I didn't mind so much. The perfume was extremely effective at removing smells after I had visited a restaurant, although it didn't prevent the odour from sticking in the first place.

Verdict: 4/5

3. Ariana Grande Sweet Like Candy Hair Mist – £13

Like the star herself, Grande's fragrance is cutesy and sweet with a blend of pear, vanilla orchid and marshmallow fragrances. It was easy to apply – I spritzed two pumps into the air above my hair and let it settle, then brushed through. I found it had incredible staying-power – flip your tresses and it'll leave a scent in the air long after you leave a room – but didn't add weight to my hair.

Verdict: 3/5

4. Christophe Robin Instant Volumizing Hair Mist with Rose Water – £29

This fragrance, from Natalie Portman and Tilda Swinton's hair colourist, is made from 96 per cent rose water. When sprayed on wet hair then blow-dried, the delicate fragrance stayed with my hair all day long. The product didn't quite deliver the promised volume, but didn't weigh down my hair either.

Verdict: 4/5

5. RPR Make Me Shine Glossing Mist – reduced to £9

The fragrance comes second with this mist, but that doesn't mean it's lacking in that department. It smells crisp and outdoorsy but didn't last long. It did tame flyaways and frizz well, though. When reapplied to keep the fragrance in my hair, I found the spray left my locks slick and heavy – so one application is the maximum I would go for. It does, however, provide UV protection and contain vitamin E to help repair damage.

Verdict 2/5
