Sleb Safari: The Richard and Judy show

JUDY Finnigan – the woman who put the Judy in Richard and Judy – has been chatting to The Times about life with her gaffe-prone husband and reading her interview made Sleb Safari nostalgic for a time when the couple ruled daytime TV and Sleb Safari had a 12-hour week at university.

Sleb Safari still catches Richard Madeley on Radio 2 from time to time which is nice. He’s very bouncy, isn’t he? Like a Labrador pup. It’s endearing, although possibly exhausting to be around for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Tops.

Sleb Safari felt a bit sorry for their daughter Chloe when she took part in epic Channel 4 winter sports reality TV show The Jump earlier this year. She was the only contestant whose mum and dad were there, all the time, in every shot. Davina McCall interviewed Richard and Judy about Chloe’s ski jumps and speed skating more often than she interviewed Chloe.

The couple are writing novels these days and Judy says it “means more” to see your name on a book than a television credit because it feels like she’s “done something worthwhile”.

At this point Sleb Safari loves her for not pretending that she enjoyed interviewing soap stars.

“Terry Wogan always used to say television is footprints in the sand, and that’s all it is. Sometimes you feel you’ve interviewed every single soap star in Britain, and I don’t want to do that anymore. It’s ceased to interest me. Richard still really enjoys it; I can’t be bothered.”

The couple will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary soon and Sleb Safari’s favourite bit of the interview was when Judy talked about her husband.

“He’s a constant pleasure to have around and a pleasure to be with, whereas I have a fairly anxious side and I tend to worry…

“Do I still fancy him? Richard? Yes, of course I do! Very much. Do we argue? God, yes, of course we argue.

“We’re not Mr and Mrs Perfect by any means, but marriage gets easier with time. You mature. You don’t take umbrage at the same things and you rub the corners off each other… I’m very lucky that with my personality, which tends to be a bit anxious and pessimistic, I’m with someone who’s the complete opposite. He’s good for me.”

So there. Now we know that behind the eye rolling and the muttered ‘Richards’, Judy fancies the corduroys off her husband and Sleb Safari thinks the pair of them are quite sweet really.

Katy Perry Hears the Nuns Roar

UPDATED property news from Los Angeles where Katy Perry’s efforts to buy a former convent have got the archbishop hot under the collar.

The pop star thought she had bought the hilltop property for $14.5 million in cash when the archbishop agreed the sale but it turned out the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary had already sold it to someone else for $15.5m.

Both sides claim they have the right to sell the eight-acre site and the matter has reached court.

The nuns had rejected an offer from Katy because they were unhappy with her “public image” (that’ll be the California Gurls video, Sleb Safari suspects). Imagine how they would have reacted if she was still married to Russell Brand.

Katy had tried to win the sisters over during a visit, showing them the `Jesus’ tattooed on her wrist and singing Oh Happy Days and reportedly told them she wanted to live in the villa with her mother and grandmother.

In the latest development both sides have been ordered by the courts to work out the terms of a temporary restraining order which the order is taking against the archdiocese to try and stop its sale of the convent. The archdiocese meanwhile is suing the nuns for the same reason.

It’s going to take divine intervention to get this dispute settled.

Arrivederci to Lake Como

SLEB Safari greets you today with its head in a suitcase as it packs up and prepares to bid arrivederci to Lake Como after a month-long stay.

Sleb Safari accepts that returning to real life will be as pleasant as being slapped about the face with a wet fish and the biggest adjustment may well be dealing with a drop in temperature of 20 or so degrees.

Sleb Safari will be frank with you. It was impossible to (window) shop in Bellagio when the temperature was 39 degrees. It cramped the riviera/Hamptons look Sleb Safari was striving for and resulted in a melting Walls Mini Milk look.

Until Sleb Safari readjusts to temperatures at home you can expect to see it wearing every item in its wardrobe and rocking a Michelin man look. Ciao!
