Superb stuff

FOR taxi drivers, the arrival of a new Skoda Superb must make them feel a bit like a Manchester United fan told the club has signed Lionel Messi, writes William Scholes.

The Superb is, well, superb. No other car offers the back seat space and legroom, the enormous boot, the practicality, the durability and reasonable running costs.

And it's a relaxed, comfortable cruiser - that's why the police like them, too.

Estate versions not only rival a Transit van for luggage space but, painted in a nice dark shade, manage to look particularly elegant. Skoda hasn't shown us what the new estate looks like yet, but the saloon looks much as one would expect of a modern Skoda - that means razor-sharp creases in the body panels and a certain restrained handsomeness.

The exterior might be low-key but it is the interior that really gives the Superb something to shout about.

In fact, it's so big in there that you would probably get an echo. Front seat passengers get more room than in the outgoing car, but it's in the back where the Superb bellows its advantage - rear legroom has grown, and is about twice as much as that of its next largest rival, says Skoda. The boot has grown too, up 30 litres on the outgoing car to 625 litres.

Taxi drivers know a good car when they drive one; Skoda will be hoping that this new, more premium Superb is able to broaden the model's customer base.
