A feast of 3D delights

DERRY'S annual celebration of cinema launches its spring programme today with a special event tracing the history of 3D cinema. Foyle Film Festival's The Innovation in Cinema: 3D Day at Brunswick Moviebowl has been curated by leading film historian Professor Ian Christie. The day begins with two screenings of Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Dial M For Murder, which has now been restored to its full three-dimensional glory, at 10am and 2pm. At 7.30pm, the documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams by Werner Herzog brings the world's most ancient cave paintings to vivid life through 3D cinematography. 3D Day closes with a 9.30pm screening of James Cameron's pioneering 3D blockbuster, Avatar, pictured. Martin Melarkey, Nerve Centre director and event programmer said: "Until recently 3D was part of the lost history of cinema, but it has returned with a vengeance since the triumph of Avatar. We hope people will take the opportunity to see some of the best 3D films on the big screen." * Tickets from Nervecentre.org or Brunswick Moviebowl.
