Arts Q&A

Brian Campbell puts performers and artists on the spot about what really matters to them. This week comedian and king of the absurdist one-liner Milton Jones

1. When did you think about comedy as a career and what were your first steps into it?

When I started doing impressions of teachers at school. Then later when I wanted to be an actor, but no-one else did. Once I'd tried it I was hooked.

2. Best gig or gigs you've been to?

Crowds vary enormously in size and temperament. Best venue is always the Comedy Store in London. I've been lucky enough to perform in Sydney Opera House, overlooking Times Square in New York, but the best gigs are often one-off charity events in a church hall or in a field where everyone pulls together for a good cause and the acts go off script.

3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band of choice?

Boney M singing Ra Ra Rasputin at my funeral.

4. The record you'd take to a desert island?

The Circle of Life.

5. And the book?

Anything that floats or some sort of survival guide. No, Lord of the Flies.

6. Top three films?

Toy Story 3, Ben Hur, Godfather 2.

7. Worst film you've seen?

Pokemon the movie.

8. Favourite authors?

Dostoyevsky, CS Lewis, Dr Seuss.

9. Sports you most enjoy and top teams?

Football - Arsenal. Rugby - Stoke City. And athletics.

10. Ideal holiday destination?

Desert Island.

11. Pet hate?

Cats.

12. What's your favourite dinner/dessert/drink?

Puddings, puddings, puddings.

13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?

My wife Carol. We agreed to go halves on some kids.

14. Is there a God?

Science begins to explain the technique behind the universe, but not its sheer artistry.
