LEON JOINS SUPER-ESTATE PACK

We recently featured on these pages a couple of cars that I thought may very well be the 'fastest car in the real world, for real people', writes William Scholes.

They were the Audi RS3 and the Volkswagen Golf R Estate. Now we can add a third to the list - the Seat Leon ST Cupra.

Decoding the name tells us it this an estate version of Seat's very good Leon in super-rapid Cupra form.

It may not be as fast or as powerful as its Volkswagen or Audi relatives, but it's not far off it, plus it's a healthy wedge of cash cheaper, even if there's not as much space between the Leon and the Golf as you might imagine - Leon ST Cupra prices start at £28,505. Nor is it, like the Golf R, four-wheel-drive.

Power comes from a four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 276bhp, channelled to the front wheels via either a manual or double-clutch automatic gearbox. Top speed is limited to 155mph and 0-62mph takes 6.0 seconds in the automatic car and 6.1 seconds in those with manual transmissions.

The 'regular' Leon ST I tested in 2014 was one of my favourites of the year, and the Cupra still has the same vast 587 litre boot (1,470 litres when the seats are folded) and general style and practicality.

Various options appropriate for a serious performance car are available, including semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, beefed-up brakes and bucket seats.

The ST Cupra should arrive in showrooms next month.
