BELFAST residents are urged to take part in on-road cycle training ahead of the new Belfast Public Bike Share Scheme organised by the charity Sustrans.

The accredited training aims to equip new or returning cyclists with the confidence and skills to hop on the new bikes as part of their daily commute or travel between destinations within the city. The Bike Share Scheme will initially include 300 public bikes, and up to 30 bike-docking stations in the city centre. The first sessions start this Monday with free training open to anyone aged 14 years and older. To register go to sustrans.org.uk/belfastcycletraining or for more information contact Sustrans Belfast Office on 028 9043 4569 or email Belfast@sustrans.org.uk.

EMERITUS Professor John Sweeney of NUI Maynooth will address the topic, Climate Change: The Clock is Ticking, at an event in Letterkenny Regional Cultural Centre on Friday at 7.30pm. Members of the public are invited to this event, which will be co-hosted by Eco-Congregation Ireland (ECI) and Raphoe Justice and Peace Group.

Prof Sweeney is currently leading a research programme into the impacts of climate change in Ireland and into the production of climate scenarios for Ireland for mid and end century.

ECI is a project of the Irish Inter-Church Meeting that encourages churches to adopt an eco-friendly approach to worship, lifestyle, property management, community outreach and contact with the developing world. Following Prof Sweeney's talk, members of two eco-congregations will give short presentations about the steps they have taken to 'green' their churches.

A NEW Irish blog has been launched by Dr Cara Augustenborg, the Irish Green Party spokesperson on climate change. Every Friday leading up to the historic UN Climate Change Conference in Paris this December, she will tackle some frequently asked questions on the issue, with a particular emphasis on Ireland.
