Ruby reds for winter warmth

WE may have overindulged during Christmas and New Year, but not all of us will be doing Dry January.

The temperature is cold outside and the damp weather makes us want to curl up on the sofa and wait for the spring. But on those cold and bitter wintery nights there's a lot to be said for a comforting glass of a big punchy red.

And because it's January you might pick up a bargain as most of the supermarkets fight to get consumers through their doors after the Christmas hype.

Try: Bouchard Aine Et Fils Pinot Noir, Sainsbury's, was £8.75, now £6 until January 20. A great wine with a low price but doesn't sacrifice on quality.

Another bonus is it's a screw-top so there's no fiddling with corks. This specially selected Pinot Noir has delicate notes of ripe fruits with a palate dominated by blackcurrant and black cherry. After opening let it breathe for about an hour and you will have a smooth red wine to accompany your roast beef.

Also: Wolf Blass Vineyards Release Shiraz, Asda, £6.98 or 2 for £10. With concentrated dark jammy fruits and a freshness on the finish to keep it refreshing - this is a real winter treat that's easy on the purse. Shiraz matches well with lamb, burgers, game, casseroles, roast beef and cheese.

Or if you're feeling adventurous and want to try for something different, Marsala Superiore Riserva, M&S, £6.49. Marsala is one of the great sweet wines of the world, made from native grapes grown on the sun drenched soils of Sicily. A thick, rich aroma, of dried fruits, raisins, sultanas, figs, and a smell of liquorice root.
