A natural look

In the news

EAGLE-eyed nature lovers are invited to take a closer look at the Woodland Trust's Canal Wood and its precious wild inhabitants today from 10am until 1pm.

Canal Wood is a quiet corner of nature stretching alongside the historic Newry Canal, not far from Poyntzpass in Co Armagh. With more than eight hectares of woodland and wetland, this haven is home to a spectacular variety of birds, including reed bunting and snipe as well as kestrels and grasshopper warblers too.

Canal Wood is situated beside the towpath of the Newry to Portadown Canal, between Gambles Bridge (on the Dromantine Road) and Jerrettspass.

SOUTH Tipperary beekeeper Irene Power will speak at the August meeting of Dromore Beekeepers' Association in Dromore High School at 7.30pm on Tuesday. The subject of her presentation is Making Increase - increasing the number of colonies managed by beekeepers. All beekeepers are eager to replace losses, due to swarming and disease, before the autumn so Irene's presentation is very timely.

SCHOOLS, youth groups and community groups are invited to apply for free packs of trees for planting this autumn as part of the Woodland Trust's Centenary Woods project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The trees, which will be delivered this November, will be living memorials that will stand tall for generations to come. Find out more and register for your free trees online at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/freetrees Applications must be received by September 4.

A NEW Irish study has shown a major link between air pollution and the development of childhood asthma. Researchers at University Hospital Galway examined the relationship of air pollution and climatic variables to asthma admission rates of children in Galway city over a 21 year period - 1985-2005.

Over the past 20 years in Galway, asthma admission rates increased steadily to a peak in 1995 and then dropped dramatically. The study indicates that the drop in asthma cases is linked to improved air quality in recent years.
