Stick your neck out

After clutch bags last week, I'm focussing on accessories again this week - in the shape of statement necklaces, writes Niamh Kelly

STATEMENT necklaces - essential items for both everyday and evening looks, in my estimation. They instantly transform an outfit and they're a great way to experiment with your style.

I'm covering all bases, from a terrific tribal trend to soft and sweet pastel pieces. Now, they're all large pieces so you need to wear them with confidence and, depending on your outfit, minimal styling. 1. The tribal trend is never out of season and it can always spice up your look. There are so many different colours to work with, from rose gold, ghetto gold, silver or a rusted vintage gold. I've chosen this piece from Accessorize (£25) - it's quite simple yet quite the statement. The solid gold, white and diamante stones will work with most items in your wardrobe and you can wear it year after year. 2. This fabulous necklace by Jon Richard at Debenhams (£25), is fittingly called 'Mood'. Such a dark and deep piece can add edginess and can vamp up your style. I love the gothic feel - the emerald green and yellow shades help lift it colour-wise. 3. I'm partial to a little beadwork and heavy embellishment on my jewellery pieces so this breathtaking blue beaded collar from Biba at the House of Fraser (£45) jumped out at me. The soft silk ribbon lends added elegance. This piece would look beautiful worn with a cream dress and simple make-up. 4. A little pastel brightens up your wardrobe at this time of year - this adorable pink and clear diamante necklace from Next (£25) says 'spring' to me. I would wear a necklace like this with a chiffon shirt and sweetheart sweater. You would look effortlessly chic and the necklace would pop perfectly against your 'preppy' outfit. Perhaps a boyfriend watch or cocktail ring would help complete your look without overpowering it. 5. I'm all about vibrant colours, from my clothes to my shoes - and my jewellery is no different. These kinds of colours work best with my skin tone and they help me feel bright and cheerful. River Island (£18) produce fantastic collections of statement necklaces season after season but I look forward to their spring/summer pieces in particular because they're bold and beautiful. Tiered necklaces are always great for adding drama to your look and I try to find a style that has a variety of colours. A piece this bold and vibrant needs little else.

6. Last but certainly not least, another item from River Island (£28) - they can do no wrong in my eyes. This black Perspex and neon beaded necklace grabbed my attention the second I spied it.

This is for those of you who like to cause a stir and push your fashion boundaries. The black, clear and yellow neon colours complement each other so well and they're perfectly appropriate for welcoming in the sunny spring/summer season.
