Cut down on sugar in hot drinks

DRINKING tea or coffee with sugar is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to rotting our teeth.

Even though you may only put a small amount in the drink, the damage still occurs because we tend to take hot drinks several times a day. This means that your teeth are always coated with sugar.

This year, try taking tea and coffee without sugar or sweeteners. It doesn't take long to get used to the new taste and you will soon find that you will need less fillings at the dentist. An added bonus is that by doing this it can help with weight loss. Smokers tend to experience more gum disease, which loosens teeth and makes them fall out.

Smokers lose teeth at twice the rate of non-smokers, meaning that many smokers end up with dentures or require a lot of treatment to repair their teeth. This is another incentive to cut down on or quit cigarettes.

Try switching to an electric toothbrush. Both manual and powered toothbrushes can effectively clean your teeth.

However, electric toothbrushes can give up to 20 per cent more efficient cleaning by thoroughly removing the soft white plaque that causes the teeth to decay. Electric toothbrushes are especially great for people with reduced mobility in their hands or for those who need assistance with movement.

Avoid rinsing with water after you brush your teeth. This is so simple to incorporate into your routine and can give you a whopping 30 per cent reduction in tooth decay. It works because it leaves the toothpaste on the teeth to seep in and harden them. Any toothpaste containing fluoride will help protect your teeth.

If you haven't been for a check-up at the dentist for a while now, could be the time to get back on track and make sure that your teeth, gums and mouth are healthy.

Even if you have a phobia of the dentist there are many ways to overcome your fear and be able to have treatment successfully. Some dental phobias may impact day-to-day life for many years.

Many people get a great sense of relief and satisfaction when they deal with their dental phobia. 2014 is hopefully the year for a comfortable mouth, a great smile and peace of mind.
