The idea of having a GAA Club in Lisnaskea was first decided in 1903 -1904 by Mick McManus and James Hogan.
They invited some people they thought might be interested in forming a Club to meet them after mass with a view to forming a committee. After some consultation in the chapel grounds big Johnny Maguire of Carrick was appointed Chairman and James Hogan Secretary.
The Committee members were Mick McManus, John Cosgrove, Bill Ardbuckle, Barney Durnien and Bartholmew McManus but the Club were not affiliated to the County Board nor did they take part in the Championship until 1905. Lisnaskea Emmetts were affiliated as a new Club at a meeting at the Fermanagh County Board in Teemore on Sunday 29 January 1905. In the early 1920's anyone involved in any of the national movements were either on the run or arrested leaving the GAA in the area dormant. Sometime around 1914 -1916 like most other Clubs, Lisnaskea Emmetts were out of existence.
The Emmetts were revived again in 1926 after the word was spread about the locality that a meeting was arranged for a particular Thursday night, the meeting was held at Whitepark Cross and there were just seven men who turned up; John McCarroll, Bill Maguire, James McCormack, Wilter McCaffrey, Frank Dundas, Paddy Gorrell and John Carron. There came a shower of rain and the seven of them piled into the big yellow dodge car of John McCarrolls. Bill Maguire was made Chairman, James McCormack Treasurer and John Carron Secretary.
The club then embarked on its most successful period winning 16 SFC titles up to 1954. This period was dominated by club legend Tommy Durnien who still has his record-breaking collection of 12 SFC medals. He also holds the distinction of being the first player from fermanagh to represent Ulster in the Railway cup.
The period after 1954 was a barren one with the club in the doldrums before securing a JFC in 1968. This was built upon and the team soon achieved senior success again with a SFC win over a highly fancied Enniskillen Gaels team in 1977. This was repeated in 1980. Star player of that era was Gerry Mc Elroy who went on to assist Pat king in the stewardship of the county team. The next SFC was gained in 1991 against neighbours Newtownbutler and again in 1994 VS Devenish. The clubs most recent senior title was the SFL in 1999 but we hope that we can build on this successful minor team and other prominent youth teams in the club to challenge for senior honours again in the near future.
