Forward This abbreviated version of the history of the Russell Gaelic Union is dedicated to the many men and woman, who for over 100 years, have given off their time and energy to ensure the continuance of Gaelic games in Downpatrick. The magnitude of the achievement can only be appreciated when one considers the demographic and social dangers which occurred during that period, the anti-Gaelic lobby which raised its head from time to time, and the increasing number of counter attractions implicit on urbanisation. The men and women to whom we are indebted were proud of their sporting and cultural history.
