SPECIAL Covid-19 press conferences aimed at children should be considered by Stormont ministers, an assembly committee chairman has said.

Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle, who chairs the cross-party education committee, called for dedicated updates for young people led by the first and deputy first ministers.

Mr Lyttle, who took part in an online discussion with the Northern Ireland Youth Forum on the issue, said similar initiatives by leaders in other countries had proven successful.

He said many young people have concerns about the crisis, which such an event could help allay.

"There are many issues impacting children and young people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as their education being affected, their hobbies and interests being cancelled, and being unable to see their friends," Mr Lyttle said.

"We have seen countries such as Norway, Denmark and New Zealand successfully conduct similar events, with children and young people asking questions to help them understand the pandemic, while reassuring them.

"I have now written to the first and deputy first ministers to request they hold such a dedicated press conference for children and young people.

"It would help engage young people with the work being undertaken during the crisis, allowing them to ask questions on their concerns and address issues relevant to them."
