A Dublin care home has seen 11 residents die as a result of confirmed or suspected coronavirus infection.

St Mary's Hospital, which offers almost 200 residential spaces for elderly people, has had 10 confirmed Covid-19 deaths and one suspected fatality since April 2.

Run by the Health Service Executive and based in Phoenix Park, it is one of more than 200 nursing home coronavirus "clusters" in the Republic, prompting health minister Simon Harris to announce testing on residents who are not showing symptoms.

A HSE spokesperson said: "We offer our deepest sympathies to their family and friends and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

"We remain in contact with relatives and next-of-kin of all residents within St Mary’s Hospital in relation to any suspect or confirmed cases of Covid-19. The safety and wellbeing of our residents and staff is our priority.

"Many of the team working in St Mary’s Hospital worked closely with residents over a long period, and we also offer them our sympathies."
