Millions of items of personal protective equipment (PPE) have arrived in Northern Ireland.

The equipment, which was authorised and sent by the British government, includes 1.3 million aprons and 307,800 respirator masks.

Health minister Robin Swann visited the Boucher Road warehouse where the kit is being held prior to distribution.

He said: "I want to make clear that we have sufficient personal protective equipment supply for current demand and will continue to actively model projected demand.

"We are working extremely hard to secure more supplies, given anticipated future demand and the likelihood of a second surge later in the year.

"As I have stated, there's not a country in the world that can definitively say it has enough PPE in stock, given the global uncertainty about the path this virus will take.

"We are continuing to proactively pursue all feasible PPE supply routes, both international and local. I can confirm that further supply is being sourced from the local economy."

Medics have been calling for extra supplies since the coronavirus outbreak began. An expected joint order with the Republic from China fell through last week.

Mr Lewis told the BBC the equipment would be delivered to the health services "in the course of the day" and would help ensure sure staff had the "protection they need".

British Health Secretary Matt Hancock had announced during the British government's daily coronavirus briefing on Friday April 3 that five million items of PPE would "immediately" be provided to the Northern Ireland healthcare workforce.

Nurses have warned that without protective equipment they will not be able to treat patients.

Speaking on Friday, Health Minister Robin Swann welcomed the Whitehall delivery of the five million PPE 'items' but conceded we could "of course" do more, citing the global shortage.

Nurses in two health trusts have contacted a lawyer in a desperate bid to get supplies and demand "priority" testing.

A surge in cases due to the numbers infected with Covid-19 before lockdown was imposed is due to reach its peak over the next fortnight.

A number of facilities have been re-purposed as testing or treatment centres and pressure is mounting on hospital intensive care units.
