THE Northern Ireland Hospice has launched a new appeal for donations to counter the "devastating impact" of coronavirus on its fundraising abilities.
The 'Now, More Than Ever' emergency appeal is calling for people to donate what they can during the COVID-19 lockdown in order for the Hospice and Children's Hospice to continue to support more than 4,000 people annually living with life-limiting conditions.
The appeal was launched with the help of Leicester City FC manager and Hospice ambassador Brendan Rodgers, who urged people to make donations during a video broadcast from his home.
NI Hospice chief executive Heather Weir said the inability to carry out fundraising events due to coronavirus meant the charity is facing a shortfall of up to £10 million by the end of the year.
"We decided we needed an emergency appeal for donations when it was clear that if we didn't take immediate action, our vital care services were at risk," she said.
"I know this is a worrying time for everyone and many are concerned about the future, we are asking for whatever help people are able to give. Our appeal is aptly named 'Now, More Than Ever' because we know that our supporters who are also suffering through this crisis, will want to protect our future."
The charity has also called for emergency government support for hospices across the North in order to supply protective equipment for staff and patients. Ms Weir said previous government funding that covered 50 percent of perinatal and end-of-life care for the Children's Hospice is ending. She dubbed the new campaign "the most important appeal for the Hospice since our formation".
