THE owners of the Armagh City Hotel have offered it to the Southern Health Trust to be used by healthcare workers.

It is understood that the hotel, which closed its doors to the public last week, will be passed over to the trust from Monday.

The Mooney Group are believed to have made contact with the Department of Health last week to offer the premises for use in the battle with coronavirus.

It is to be used as accommodation for healthcare staff, including frontline doctors and nurses, involved in dealing with the pandemic.

SDLP assembly member Justin McNulty said it was a great gesture.

"The Armagh City Hotel will be utilised from Monday coming as part of the Southern Trust’s battle with coronavirus," he said.

"Massive well done to the owners in offering their premises for the cause."

The gesture has also been praised by members of the public on social media.

One woman wrote on Facebook: "Really well done. Armagh as a community are really coming together", while another added: "This is such uplifting news. Well done to all those involved in securing this agreement."
