REPUBLIC of Ireland football captain Seamus Coleman has appealed to young people to stay indoors during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coleman also encouraged donations to a GoFundMe appeal for frontline health workers, having given €20,000 to the Feed the Heroes page.

In a video message released by Everton FC, the club captain acknowledged how difficult the crisis was for people of every nationality.

“For Irish people I know we are a proud nation. We stick together; we work hard for each other and though I know it’s a tough time at the minute we will get through this. Stay positive and keep fighting,” he said.

Coleman is originally from Killybegs in Co Donegal and played for St Catherine’s GAA club before signing for Everton.

Directing a particular message to young people, he said: “They are saying that elderly people are being more affected by it (Covid-19) so I’d like to speak to the younger people, the younger generation. Stay indoors; do what’s right.

“I know that if it was younger people dying from it more so that older people would most certainly stay indoors. I want us all to stick together at this time. If you can donate towards the page (Feed the Heroes).”
