BALLYMENA manufacturer Wrightbus has secured a fresh order for its hydrogen fuel cell buses.

UK public transport company Go-Ahead has signed the contract which will see the single-decker vehicles rolled out by Brighton & Hove and Metrobus next June.

The Wrightbus-made GB Kite Hydroliners will the first hydrogen powered vehicles in Go-Ahead’s fleet of more than 6,000 buses.

A second tranche of 34 hydrogen powered buses is also being considered.

It comes just one day after Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon announced a deal to buy 38 battery electric buses from Wrightbus for Derry City’s urban network.

Wrightbus executive chairman, Jo Bamford, said greenhouse gases from transportation accounts for a third of the UK’s total carbon emissions.

“To date, our world-leading double decker Hydroliners have prevented one million kg of CO2 from entering the atmosphere,” he said.

“The introduction of the new GB Kite Hydroliner single decker will help to prevent even more carbon from being released. It’s fantastic to see Brighton & Hove and Metrobus taking this vital and progressive step to decarbonise public transport to help the UK hit its ambitious net zero targets."
