MCDONALDS has lodged plans to build a new drive-thru restaurant at a major supermarket hub on the outskirts of south Belfast.

The fast food giant has identified a site next to Tesco Extra in Newtownbreda as the location for its next outlet in the north.

Subject to approval, it’s expected to create around 65 full and part-time jobs.

It comes just over six weeks after McDonalds opened its 32nd Northern Ireland outlet at Derriaghy in west Belfast.

McDonald’s workforce in the north now stands at over 3,000, with seven local franchisees operating and managing the 32 restaurants.

The company has identified an area of Tesco’s car park for the proposed Newtownbreda drive-thru.

McDonalds said a review of parking facilities at the location found a number of areas considered excess to Tesco’s requirements.

Access to the drive-thru would involve the same access roads currently serving Tesco.

Construction Information Services Ireland has estimated that the development phase of the restaurant would represent an investment of around £1m.
