DOWNPATRICK-based guitar maker Lowden Guitars has been honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

The company, whose world-renowned instruments have been played by top global artists including Ed Sheeran, Snow Patrol front man Gary Lightbody and Eric Clapton, has been recognised for its outstanding achievements in international trade.

The prestigious award was announced on Tuesday to mark the monarch’s birthday.

The company, which recently celebrated 45 years in businesses, was started when George Lowden began hand-crafting guitars in 1974.

“It has been a milestone moment for Lowden Guitars to be included by the Prime Minister and Her Majesty the Queen on the list of businesses in this year’s Queen’s Awards for Enterprise,” said Mr Lowden.

“It has taken a lot of hard work, patience and determination during the last 45 years and we are delighted and humbled to be among other home-grown companies and brands on this prestigious list.”

Last year saw the company achieve significant growth and development across its export markets in the USA and Europe, partly driven by a new collaboration with Ed Sheeran.

Staff numbers also increased last year as the guitar maker launched eight new models to its core collection, along with the launch of Lowden Strings and a suite of Lowden-branded guitar care products.

Managing director David Ausdahl said the Ed Sheeran collaboration had helped introduce Lowden Guitars to a whole new generation of players.

“The whole team is pleased to congratulate George Lowden on this truly special commendation which recognises his dedication to continued growth while maintaining the outstanding reputation of the Lowden Guitars brand,” he said.

“The long judging process began last year, and we are delighted to have been notified of our award win.”

The Lowden Guitars team will celebrate its award during a royal reception for Queen’s Awards winners this summer at Buckingham Palace.
